In 2007 he was the first classified among universities professors and medical directors in Friuli Venezia Giulia – Italy – according to the H index (number of scientific publications, citations and quality/quantity scientific material produced). Up to June 2010, 709 articles are published in the most important scientific journals (not including abstracts and congress communications). 472 of them are reviewed by Medline www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed, the USA National Institute of Health database. Research activities focus on:
- tumors in the elderly - he was the first in Italy to coordinate the research activities under the CNR (Centro Nazionale Ricerche) in the 1970s;
- virus-related cancers - he is scientific coordinator of GICAT - the Italian Cooperative Study Group on AIDS and Tumors- since 1986, the first group to study the correlation between tumors and infective agents. Scientific coordinator of GECAT - European Group Cooperative Study Group on AIDS and tumors - since 2008;
- blood tumors: he coordinates with Dr. Armando Santoro from Istituto Humanitas in Milan, the GOL (Lymphoma Oncologic Group) that is now part of the Intergruppo Italiano Linfomi. He partecipate in the research activities of the EORTC – European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Lymphoma Group -;
- solid tumors: in particular lung, prostate, kidney, bladder, head and neck tumors, gastroenteric and breast cancers.
Health and environment : he is co-founder and now vice-president of the Associazione Scientifica Galileo 2001 (www.galileo2001.it). Ever since his latest research is addressed to health-environment related topics such as nuclear issues, indoor and outdoor pollution, ionized radiations, electromagnetic fields, GMOs, incinerators and climate changes. Several chapters are published in books edited by the “Associazione Scientifica Galileo 2001. Several interventions on media. He was member of the Scientific Committee of SOGIN SpA (Società Gestione Impianti Nucleari – Management of Nuclear Plants Society).
He was the first in Italy to study the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Appointed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Atlanta USA as the only Italian member to take part to the international study commissioned group designed to develop the CDC-CFS case definition (Fukuda et al, Annals of Internal Medicine, 15 Dec 1994). Since his research more Institutes in Italy are now able to diagnose this disease. Expert in the Cancer Related Fatigue especially in
lymphoma and breast cancer survivors.
Member of the scientific board of Amici di Ale – Onlus (www.amicidiale.it) a voluntary association to support comatose patients family members. This Association is committed to build a Casa dei risvegli in Pordenone.
Founded ANGOLO in 1994 at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Aviano (Pordenone, Italy). The Cancer Survivors Italian Association (www.associazioneangolo.it/) is the living proof that cancer can be beaten.
Once President of AIMAC (Cancer Patients Italian Association) he is now part of the Scientific Council.
Creator of FAVO (Federation of Italian Oncology Associations www.favo.it). Favo gathers more than five hundreds associations which are committed to identify all patients needs and rights. (President of the Federation: Prof. Francesco De Lorenzo).
Promoted in 1991 the CFS Associazione Italiana - Onlus. A patients association with CFS (www.salutemed.it/cfs - www.stanchezzacronica.it). In Italy there are now four Associations.

Founded FLAI in 2008 an association of patients with lymphoma and lymphomas’ survivors. The name is now changed in La lampada di Aladino – Onlus (www.lampad-aladino.it).
Promoted at the Aviano Cancer Research Institute the first italian study on long-survivors cancer patients granted by the Ministry of Health: the O.RA Clinic (Oncology Rehabilitation Program). The clinic treats and monitors patients with long term complications due to treatments (for example the cancer related fatigue). Plans proper follow-up to prevent secondary tumors and/or new tumors. This clinic cooperates with the division of Psycology directed by Dr. Antonietta Annunziata.
